Have you ever wondered what it means to pray in the name of Jesus? What does it mean when we say there is power in the name? To find the answer to these important questions we have to go to the Bible and see what it says. What we find in the Bible will also show you how most mainstream Christians ignore the word of God to such an extent they end up like the sevens sons of Sceva (Acts 19:11-20).
John 14:13 “And I will do whatever you ask in My name so the Father may be glorified in the Son.” This is a wonderful promise we have, but if we want to experience this, we have to understand what the Bible is saying and not what we want it to say.
The Greek word used for “name” is “onomati.” Onomati means a persons name, character or reputation. In Hebrew, a name is inseparable from the person to whom it belongs because it shows us the character of that person. This is why we see Yehovah (God) changing Abrams name to Abraham (Gen 17:5) and Simons name to Peter (Matthew 16:18).
