Righteousness is defined as doing what is morally right. Who gets to decide what is morally right is often something that changes. But most of the time, we as a society can agree on a set of rules and regulations, a common standard we can all adhere to that makes us righteous. If we fail to obey by that standard, we would be considered unrighteous. We see how our society, our lives and our very existence as human beings are built upon an understanding of righteousness as a result of something we do.
